Your maternity photo session wardrobe should be simple. Soft, easy, wrinkle-free fabrics that cling to your body and accentuate your belly are best. During your session you may be standing, sitting or laying on the floor, so you should wear something you can easily move in. A stretch jersey maxi skirt paired with a tank works great. A short jersey dress or long fitted sweater paired with leggings is another attractive alternative.
If you’re comfortable with showing a little more skin you may choose to bare your belly. You can cover strategic areas with a cardigan, wrap or button down shirt. If you do decide to show your belly DO NOT wear maternity pants with an elastic belly panel. It is much more flattering to wear your pre-pregnancy jeans, unbuttoned at the top. In the studio I prefer bare feet, but ballet flats or flat sandals are comfortable options.
For a more intimate, one-on-one photo shoot, consider a full slip or boy shorts paired with a man’s button down shirt.
Colors
I advise against bold patterns. I find that they distract from the beauty of your pregnancy. Stick with solids. For maternity sessions that involve siblings, choose their outfits first then build off that. Pick 2 colors from your child’s outfit and incorporate those colors into your wardrobe. You can do this with an article of clothing or an accessory, like a scarf or bracelet. Once you have everyone’s outfits assembled, lay them out on the floor and take a picture to see if it’s working.
