Newborns are little people with their own preferences just like anyone else. Occasionally, a baby refuses to lay on their stomach, or won’t curl up in a prop no matter how patiently I try. I have never, however, photographed a baby that doesn’t like being swaddled. That’s why I typically begin every newborn session by swaddling the baby. I find it’s the best way to get them relaxed. From there we can as gradually transition to other poses.
As the baby relaxes and eventually falls asleep I can gradually pull away the wrap until I am able to pose them naked. That’s always the goal because there’s nothing as delicate and precious as newborn skin. But newborn skin is far from perfect. Most babies are born with flakes, blotches, and/or purplish hands and feet. These are temporary conditions that I’ll happily edit out. The end result is not to make a baby’s skin look like porcelain but I do want to make sure their skin tone is even and natural.
